The U20 national team, Amajita, moved closer to securing a place in the COSAFA U20 semi-finals after beating Angola 2-0 in their second Group B match in Mozambique on Monday.
The defending champions continued the strong start to their title defence following a 3-0 victory over Lesotho in their opening match. The latest win takes Amajita to six points from two matches.
Captain Lazola Maku opened the scoring in the 13th minute after getting on the end of a low cross from Steven Mendes before firing into the top-right corner to give South Africa a 1-0 lead.
Mendes then turned goalscorer before half-time, converting from an Emile Witbooi delivery to double South Africa’s advantage.
The goal was Mendes’ third of the tournament after he scored twice in the opening victory over Lesotho.
South Africa took their two-goal advantage into the break and managed the second half effectively.
Angola struggled to create clear opportunities as Amajita maintained their clean sheet and saw out the match for another important victory.
The result leaves South Africa in a strong position in Group B as they continue their bid to defend their regional title.
Amajita will play their final Group B match against Eswatini on Wednesday at 12pm. The fixture will help determine the final group standings, with the three group winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semi-finals.
The COSAFA U20 tournament is also serving as a qualifier for the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, with the two finalists earning qualification for the continental tournament.
