Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube has launched new national guidelines aimed at keeping school toilets safe, clean and dignified, shifting the focus from the eradication of pit toilets to the daily maintenance of water, sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health services in schools.

Stronger partnerships with business, civil society and development organisations are needed to ensure menstruation does not prevent girls from attending school or participating fully in education.

Msibi, a professor of Curriculum Studies in UKZN’s School of Education, previously served as a member of the Umalusi Council. He now assumes the council’s highest leadership position.

In one of the most significant changes, Gwarube said the department would begin ranking provincial matric performance using an inclusive basket of quality indicators.

Speaking at the Education World Forum in London, the minister highlighted South Africa’s efforts to strengthen foundational learning and expand Early Childhood Development.
